CAM Awareness Scale
Measuring Stuff
The CAM Awareness Scale is a calibration instrument and/or tool used exclusively to measure things - it is most effective in determing the value or worth of something.
We strongly suggest measuring things, especially your choices or decisions, regardless of whether you want to change something or not. Changing something, without measuring it may prove useless and ineffective: sometimes, even dangerous and fatal (i.e. we have some stories that would curl your hair!!!)
The things for measuring could be tangible things like: accomplishments, task to do, etc. Or, more likely - intangible things, such as emotions, preferences, wants, needs, likes, dislikes, concepts, people, ideas, happiness - literally just about anything we can imagine.
It is named the CAM Awareness Scale intentionally for a reason: by measuring something, we gain awareness - and the distinct possibility of understanding to come...
What Uses Does it Have?
The scale can help you decide or select something. You will learn about other uses as you become more experienced with the scale. Nevertheless, for now consider using the scale in your personal life or in your career: whether it be a trade, business or a profession. Begin by asking simple questions and see what comes up for you.
How it Works
The Awareness Scale is similar to a weight scale, a tape measure, or a thermometer since it has points or marks, which delineate the scale. The marks or delineations are numbers from zero (0) to ten (10). Zero is lowest number, five (5) is the middle or midpoint, while ten is highest number.
Start with Numbers first
When you first begin using the tool, stay with numerical values only from 0 to 10. Begin by asking yourself a question related to something you wish to buy, since most of us buy things all the time. As an example, frame your question to yourself in the following manner: "How important is it for me to buy this coat (e.g., replace coat with your specific object)?" and think of a number from 0 to 10. The first number that your mind selects is the your number for this item.
You may wish to become more specific about your purchase when you frame your question by using a period such as "Today", "This Week", or "This Month" etc.. Tack the period onto the object you wish to purchase such that your question now becomes: "How important is it for me to buy this Mercedes this decade"? OK, so you get the point!
Now, start using the numbers. You will soon gain some sense of the numerical values you select. You may even wish to track the numbers of things you select by recording them (i.e. anal retentive’ - Unite!). Seriously though, once you have a sense of this, you can begin to gauge where your numbers land in reference to o, the midpoint of 5, and 10.
This gauging will become important for you. You may even begin to create rules for your numbers. Some examples of rules your could create for yourself are as follows:
-
Any selected number that falls below 4 means my decision is Not Now:
-
Any selected number that falls below 2 means my decision is Not Ever
-
Any selected number that equals 5 means my decision is Maybe Sometime but Not Now
-
Any selected number that falls above 9 means my decision is Now is the Right Time
By the way, you can create anything that you want because this is your system. Just start using the tool and see what happens!
Then second, assign Meanings to numbers
Once you have gained experience using the numbers, you can elevate your numbers to be associated with meanings. You can create definitions (e.g., you create anything that is important or helpful to you) that will be effective across varied requirements - for your own personal or professional requirements.
We strongly suggest using these in your personal life first: gain confidence before trying them in business situations.
Let us assume for the moment some simple Meanings: an assignment of low to zero, average to five and high to ten. When your mind selects a number, those numbers now mean low, average, and high.
You may also create a rule for yourself such that:
-
low means any number below 3,
-
average means any number from 4 to 7, and
-
high means any number above 8.
This actually changes the measurement and may make it easier for you.
An Example of Meaning that Might Help You
Another example we often refer to is CAM Measuring Success - see the illustration close by.
We have defined for ourselves two items: 1) success to be anything between the numbers 8 to 10; and 2) excellence as being 9.5 to 10.
Since we created this for ourselves, it doesn't mean that its true but it can be very useful for us. This is what we mean by assigning meaning to numbers.
We have other examples and more will be revealed in our workshops and seminars but this is enough to get you going.
